iffraction gratings might be what you’re already familiar with. So for instance, there are these glasses that you can wear, and there’s kind of a here, a picture of what you might roughly see when you look through, you see all of these rainbows everywhere, and these get called fireworks glasses, things like that.

And those are. Diffraction gratings now they’re transmission diffraction gratings. So what that means is the light starts on one side and then you see the pretty rainbows on the other. Now, a reflection diffraction grating.

So when we have reflection gratings, that is, you know, light coming in and bouncing off some sort of surface. So this might look like it is definitely. Reflection, grating, but it actually depends on what these materials are made out of. If this is plastic and this is plastic and they’re both more or less transparent, then this is what the structure could be of a transmission grating as well.

So all of these diffraction gratings, I would kind of put into three categories. We can have a scientific apparatus, right. A device that we are using for something in a class or even in research. And there are a lot of research grade applications of these. Those diffraction gratings, what you would buy to do research with.

They’re going to be really expensive. Now there are just flat out fun toys. Again, things like this, where you look through and you see rainbows and really that’s just meant to be cool.

But then there’s also going to actually be categories of natural phenomenon. Now the most important thing to recognize is that we’re really going to have one number that describes these. And this is going to be our lines per inch or per millimeter, per centimeter, per meter. Whatever this distance is can vary, but you have some sort of, of distance and you have a number Of lines and this number could be very big.

So this is really important. And normally when you buy a diffraction grating, this is the value that describes it.
