The application of photonics spreads across very different areas: from optical data communication to imaging, lighting, manufacturing, life sciences, health care, security and safety. Photonics offers new and unique solutions where today\u2019s conventional technologies are approaching their limits: speed, capacity and accuracy. The impact of photonics in our daily\u00a0lives is remarkable. It becomes visible by looking at some current challenges:<br \/>\n\u2022 Augmented and virtual reality for consumers and even more relevant\u00a0for industrial applications.<br \/>\n\u2022 Assistance systems in automotive as rear\/side-view cameras, LED\/laser\u00a0lighting, lidar, night vision support, head-up displays, etc.<br \/>\n\u2022 Industry 4.0 with its connected individual production lines and\u00a0substitution of humans in mechanical and electric production lines by\u00a0robots requires exact three-dimensional imaging, object recognition,\u00a0barcode scanning, quality inspection, distance control, and absolute\u00a0optical measurements.<br \/>\n\u2022 Continuous development of displays with higher resolutions or trends like \u201cinternet of things\u201d need lithographic production lines with accurate resolution that need interferometric measurement and\u00a0recording devices with precise imaging objectives.<br \/>\n\u2022 Enlarged usage of laser technology for cutting, engraving, or welding.<br \/>\n\u2022 Use of cameras for security and defense applications or in drones.<br \/>\n\u2022 Three-dimensional printing requires three-dimensional imaging.<br \/>\n\u2022 Continuously increasing performance and power of laser sytems.<br \/>\nAll these applications rely to a certain extent on elements out of the optical material, which guide, transport or modify light. Each optical element has its dedicated function, so that a very special optical material needs to be chosen. In a portfolio of more than 200 existing optical materials, every single glass\/crystal has its purpose and complements all the others.<br \/>\nA selection of optical materials is shown in 2 Figures below sorted\u00a0along their most important properties: \u201crefractive index\u201d and \u201ctransmission\u201d.<br \/>\nThe following subsections will provide an overview of the production\u00a0processes and the unique properties of optical glasses, quartz glass and optical crystals.
